The aerial cable link between the two banks of the Penfeld River in Brest, a design-construction project for Brest Métropole Océane by a consortium that includes Bouygues Bâtiment Grand Ouest, is symbolic for the city of Brest and a first in France. It links the city centre with the new Les Capucins district, which is currently under construction. Take a look at this flagship project for new form of transportation.
Urban cable car systems are a new form of transport much sought after by gridlocked cities. Until recently only connected with tourism, this mode of transport is now being adopted by cities because it’s lighter and cheaper to install than tram lines.
On the Brest cable car system, Bouygues Travaux Publics, Bouygues Bâtiment Grand-Ouest and Bouygues Energies & Services worked hand in hand to ensure the opening on November 19. A distinctive feature of the project is that the cable cars travel one above the other, rather than side by side. Offering a 360° view of the River Penfeld, they will make the 400m crossing in three minutes, each 13m2 car carrying up to 60 passengers. This equates to 675,000 people per year.
